Ah, the smell of wild garlic!
As is our want, we went for a cycle along the canal, visiting no less than three eateries on the way.
Staffordshire. It's lovely 😊

We love it when we get a review from guests that really 'get' what we're trying to do 🙂

The owners of The Laurels have perfected the Bed and Breakfast.
Every review you will read about The Laurels will rave about the owners and their stunning property, the wonderful views on offer, the "to die for" breakfast and the excellent rooms available at a very reasonable cost. All of which are fully justified. However, what stood out more than anything for us was the experience. We travel as a couple and a family often, involving a mixture of long and short stays. This specific visit to Alton was a birthday treat for my Wife. By the time this trip came about we were both worn down from work so we needed a rollercoaster or two but more importantly to eat as much as we could and sleep for as long as possible without noise or interruption. What makes The Laurels better than the competition is that the owners understand this. The zero party policy is extremely underrated and should be the standard in every establishment. The gentleman owner we met was friendly and accommodating, seemingly on hand whenever we needed something, and you can tell the owners run a very tight ship deserving of pride. We stayed in the King Room which for us was ideal. The décor was thoughtful with an excellent choice of interior design and each room was aided by modern technology. There is a fridge in the room, so we didn't have to bring our own, and fresh milk provided in place of the god awful UHT without charge. There was an Alexa which we used constantly for music and to open/close the curtains. A QR Code provides all of the information you need for your stay which answers every question you may have upon arrival. The mini bar had a great selection of food and drink all of which was on offer at cost price. Breakfast was fresh, not greasy, and it was nice to see that allergies and vegan options were important to the owners and alternatives freely provided. The bed completely made of memory foam was divine.

A Visit to Carsington Water
A Visit to Carsington Water

In keeping with my unhealthy interest in the weather, it struck me today that I wasn't sure where the term "Indian Summer" came from. I'd always imagined it was something to do with India and the fact the weather improved in September after the monsoons. But no,...

The JCB Story

The JCB Story Some of you may know that JCB (of yellow digger fame) are based just up the road from us. If you’ve driven to Alton Towers via Rocester, the chances are you’ve passed their World Headquarters – a huge shed-like building with very picturesque lakes out...

Drone Footage of The Roaches
Drone Footage of The Roaches

Given that absolutely nothing is happening at The Laurels, in respect of fixing things that is, and that the weather was dry and warmish, we decided to take a trip to The Roaches. This isn't, as you may suspect, some hideous place where six-legged insects inhabit the...

Well Dressing
Well Dressing

When I was first told about well dressing, I imagined a group of immaculately groomed lovies in suits and frocks. As it turns out, well dressing is pretty much as it sounds - dressing up wells. Just up the road from us is the picture-postcard village of Tissington...

Fantasy Wire Fairies – Wish Maker

Those of you who've stayed with us already will probably have noticed the beautiful sculpture that greets you, on your way to reception. What you won't have seen, of course, is how she's actually made. During lockdown, thanks to COVID-19 we've spent a lot of time...

Kingfishers and the Caldon Canal

This sounds like a bit of a QI question, but did you know Kingfisher feathers are actually brown in colour and not blue? Their vivid colour is actually iridescence, not pigment – the pigment is brown. Interference between different wavelengths of light reflected from...
